Research on Krill Oil is Promising

Mar 19, 2010 by Bill Rawls, M.D.

I have received several inquiries lately wondering how krill oil stacks up to fish oil. I’ve been watching krill oil for some time now. It appears to be quite promising, but some questions do remain.

The omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil are phospholipids, which are much more bio-available than the triglyceride form found in fish oils. Also krill contains a potent antioxidant, found in algae the krill consume— certainly an advantage.

On another note, we do not know as much about krill as we do about fish oil. There are only three studies on krill which do suggest that it lowers cholesterol and reduces cardiovascular disease risk. An absolute optimal dosage has not been defined. Whereas, there are hundreds of papers on fish oil and the optimal dosage is well defined. The other unknown is whether krill is a sustainable resource. In other words, is it possible to over-harvest krill enough to upset the balance of the ecosystem of the ocean. It appears that for krill harvested from North Atlantic and Arctic waters, the answer is yes; but for krill harvested from Antarctic waters, the answer is probably no.

In summary, it appears that krill oil is very promising, but only if it is strictly harvested from Antarctic waters. As I continue my research over the next few months, I may transition to krill if I can find enough supporting data and can find a company that offers a good price and quality.  If you are interested in ordering a krill oil supplement in the meantime, we do have a supplier that offers a quality product and are happy to place this order for you.
