Hunger Buster Smoothie
Apr 12, 2010 by Bill Rawls, M.D.
The key ingredients in this smoothie (coconut oil, chia seeds and protein powder) will suppress hunger for hours. They contain fiber, antioxidants, protien and essential fatty acids and are is especially ideal for those seeking weight loss, heightened athletic performance, maintenence of normal blood glucose, or recovery from chronic disease.

Recommended Ingredients:
- 1-2 tbsp organic virgin coconut oil: extremely effective appetite suppressant that also increases energy levels
- 1-2 tbsp chia seeds: the fiber present in chia seeds slows absorption of glucose, suppresses appetite, and removes toxins from the body
- 1 scoop protein powder (whey, rice, soy, hemp or soy): provides essential amino acids for construction of new proteins in the body
- Natural sweetener (honey, stevia, agave nectar)
- Berries (blueberries, black berries, strawberries, raspberries, etc), frozen preferred (if not, add ice!)
- Soy milk, yogurt, and/or juice (enough to reach desired consistency)
Optional Ingredients:
- Banana
- Soft tofu
- Peanut butter
- High quality powdered greens mix
- Cocoa powder
Mix ingredients and blend thoroughly. You can even store the ingredients in the fridge/freezer for use the next day! This smoothie makes a delicious meal or make a 1/2 size version for a pick-me-up snack or "mini meal."

Where can I purchase hemp locally? I previously ordered Hemp Hearts from Canada.

I am astonished that you have recommended soy milk for this protein smoothie! 96-99% of the soy grown in the US is GMO! Not to mention the how soy acts as estrogen in a woman's body! Grassfed whey protein and raw milk from a reliable source is a much better alternative than a GMO soy product!

Hi Kathi, thank you for your comment. I agree with you that soy may not be the answer. I have read as many convincing arguments for it as against and do not believe that the final verdict on soy has yet been established. I generally recommend SILK milk, which is organic non-GMO soy, or organic milk (milk also has convincing studes either way). But my highest recommendation is actually organic unsweetened almond milk, as this is the absolute best source of calcium and has lower carbohydrates than any alternative.
