Travel Smorgasbord
Jun 29, 2010 by Bill Rawls, M.D.
Food can be an exciting part of travel and most of the time finding healthy food is not very difficult. A personal rule of avoiding all chain-restaurants and typical fast-food adds a little adventure to travel.
Beyond restaurants and cafes, taking along a cooler allows grocery stores and local markets to be included in the food inventory and saves money. Impromptu picnics in scenic areas can be a real highlight of travel.
Healthy picnic ideas:
- Carrots & hummus
- Seasonal fruit from local markets
- Local bakery bread
- Nut butter spreads (try almond!)
- Assortment of cheeses
- Chips & fresh salsa
- Dried fruit & nuts mix
- Chocolate (70% cocoa content)

I have always tried to use the same rule-- no chain restaurants when traveling! But it is always good to have a backup like fruit and trail mix, especially when passing through small Southern towns! They can be very hit or miss! Thanks Dr Rawls!

What kind of chips do you recommend?

Thanks for your comment, Belinda! Although corn chips are not exactly a "health food" by themselves, you also have to live a little bit and they are a good snack option when paired with a quality salsa or guacamole. I generally choose Garden of Eatin' brand-- they are made with organic corn and sea salt.
